THE funeral of a local lad who achieved his bucket list dream at Barnsley fire station will take place today.

Kasabian Newton-Smith, aged eight, sadly passed away earlier this month after a long battle with cancer.

Part of his bucket list was to be a firefighter, and so he visited Barnsley fire station last month, where he was welcomed to the 'white watch' team for the day.

His plight also touched football fans across the country.

An online appeal for Kasabian to meet his favourite footballer - England Captain Wayne Rooney - went viral, with players up and down the country all posting pictures of themselves doing Rooney's trademark goal celebration with one finger in the air and using the hashtag '1 Last Smile For Kasabian'.

Rooney, who was away with England, sent a video message to Kasabian along with a signed shirt.

Kasabian's funeral is for close family and friends only, but - as he was a keen motorbike fan - Barnsley bikers will join many from across the country as they escort his funeral procession this morning (December 21).
