BARNSLEY COUNCIL has approved plans to introduce a scheme where only Barnsley residents can use the town's tips.

The council approved the plans this morning (December 14) saying it had noticed an increase in people using Barnsley's tips since neighbouring towns reduced the opening hours of their sites.

Under the plans, residents visiting a tip will be issued with a car window sticker by site staff when they show a valid vehicle registration document (V5) that shows registration in the Barnsley area.

Any vehicle where the driver is not the owner (e.g. company car, mobility vehicle) will be referred to the back office.

The plan is to gradually introduce the scheme over the next three months with it becoming mandatory from March 6 2017, when only permitted vehicles or residents carrying valid photo ID showing that they are a Barnsley resident will be allowed to access the sites.
