A NEW Aldi store could open in the town centre next year.
Proposals have been submitted to Barnsley Council officials to transform a plot of land next to the Wickes store, east of Old Mill Lane, into a new branch of the low-cost supermarket.
If plans for site are given the green light, the new store will create 40 new jobs.
A spokeswoman for Aldi confirmed a decision is expected in the new year with a view to the chain buying the site in spring/summer 2017.
She said: “Once the site is purchased then Aldi will outline the programme for construction of the new store. The brownfield site has been vacant for more than ten years, the proposals provide an investment opportunity to regenerate a site within this commercial area and bring 40 local jobs to the area.”
