TRANSPORT bosses have announced a potential shake-up of bus services in Barnsley - that could see some big changes made to the town's bus network.

Plans for a new bus network and ticket system in Barnsley are to be put to transport chiefs for approval next Monday (November 7), following consultation with local communities and councillors on proposed changes for the borough.

It would see changes to bus timetables, routes and frequencies - that would be introduced in January 2017. Bus services that could change include:

7 - Hoyland/ Milton/ Rockingham/ Stairfoot/ Worsborough. Hourly service between Barnsley, Blacker Hill and Hoyland via Ardsley Road and Hunningley Lane to improve accessibility for the White Cross estate.

20/21/22 - Dodworth. 15 minute coordinated daytime service between services 20, 21 and 22 to improve spacing between buses.

67/67a -Worsborough/ Rockingham. Improved half-hourly service between Barnsley, Hoyland Common and Wombwell, alternately serving Ward Green and Pilley, both on an hourly basis. Service 67 will replace service 220 between Wombwell and Cortonwood.

203 - Darfield/ Dearne South. Serving Little Houghton instead of service X26. Passengers can interchange at Wombwell for onward journeys to Barnsley.

X27 - Darfield/ Dearne South. Serving Wombwell to improve interchange opportunities for passengers travelling to employment sites at Grimethorpe e.g. XPO Logistics.

222 -Dearne South. Replacing service 203 at Aldham House to provide a more frequent service to Barnsley.

29 - Penistone. Chapeltown-Sheffield section of route re-allocated to provide connections between Chapeltown-Penistone-Holmfirth, with one morning and afternoon Penistone - Sheffield peak hour trip via Northern General Hospital. Chapeltown-Sheffield journeys via Northern General Hospital remain available every 6 minutes on Sheffield service 1/1a.

23/23a/24/24a - Penistone. Two-hourly services between Barnsley - Thurgoland - Green Moor - Oxspring - Penistone – Ingbirchworth, and Stocksbridge - Wortley - Thurgoland - Penistone - Thurlstone - Millhouse Green. Two-hourly services between Stocksbridge - Green Moor - Thurgoland – Barnsley.

92 - Old Town/ Penistone. Operating Barnsley - Cawthorne via Dodworth Road and Higham to provide access to Dodworth Medical Centre and improve connections to Capitol Park employment area.

Proposals also include the introduction of new ‘B-Connect’ Day, seven day and 28 day tickets that can be used on any bus and will offer a discount compared to current multi-operator tickets available in the town.
