PLANS to convert the former Yorkshire Building Society into a betting shop have been submitted to Barnsley Council.

Applications for listed building consent and planning permission for change of use have been submitted by Power Leisure Bookmaker - the company behind betting firm Paddy Power.

The building, on the corner of Market Hill and Eldon Street, is grade II listed, and dates back to 1903.

It is also part of the Regent Street, Church Street and Market Hill Conservation Area - one of 18 areas in Barnsley which are deemed to have special architectural or historic interest.

Comments on the application can be submitted until October 14.
