A BARNSLEY man has been charged with GBH after assaulting a police officer - leaving him with an injury that requires reconstructive surgery.

24-year-old Vincent Pears, of Woodhead Drive, appeared at Barnsley Magistrates Court yesterday morning (Thursday, September 15) charged with section 18 assault (grievous bodily harm), aggravated vehicle taking, criminal damage and affray.

An officer attended a property on Woodhead Drive on Wednesday morning (September 14) in connection to a report of theft of vehicle.

While at the property making enquiries, the officer was attacked, suffering a serious injury to his ear that will require reconstructive surgery.

Additional police resources including police negotiators, were deployed to the address and Pears was arrested in connection to the incidents at around 11am.

Pears has been remanded into custody to appear at Sheffield Crown Court on October 13.
