BARNSLEY's war memorial has received greater protected status to mark the centenary of the start of the Battle of the Somme.
The memorial outside of the Town Hall has been upgraded to Grade II* listed status to give it greater protection.
It was chosen alongside 14 other war memorials across the country that have been given extra protection by Government heritage body Historic England.
A civic event will take place outside the front of the Town Hall tomorrow (July 1) at 1pm, to commemorate the centenary of the Battle of the Somme.
