THE BARNSLEY community is being urged to help clean up the site of the iconic Barnsley Main in time for the 150th anniversary of the Oaks Colliery Disaster.

The Barnsley Central Area Team is working with the Dearne Valley Landscape Partnership, supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund, to deliver a community clean up at the site on Sunday, July 10, between 10.30am-12.30pm.

The site has been mined since the early 19th century under different names, including the Oaks Colliery.

This December marks the 150th anniversary of the Oaks Disaster, the worst mining disaster in English history.
