POLICE are appealing for witnesses after a callous thief robbed a pensioner in her Hoyland home, punching her in the face before stealing sentimental rings.

66-year-old Mary Ackroyd was robbed of five sentimental rings, including her wedding band and engagement ring, at her home around 6pm on Monday, May 23.

Mary suffered minor injuries to her face during the attack as the thief forced his way into her home.

Mary has since been reunited with her rings, but police are still hunting for the thief.

He is described as 18-years-old, white, of slim build and is believed to have been wearing a navy blue hooded top with the hood up and blue baggy jeans.

Mary said: "I’ve had my wedding ring for 37 years so to be without it for even a day was a horrible feeling. I am so grateful to those who found them.

“What happened was awful, and it has affected me greatly. I am now far more cautious about opening the door to strangers and I always keep my door locked.

“I would urge other elderly residents in the area to be cautious about who they answer the door to and to be aware of their own personal safety.”

Anyone with further information should call 101, quoting incident number 994 of 23 May 2016.
