POLICE are appealing for witnesses after a car was shot at in Athersley North.

At around 2.15pm yesterday afternoon (Monday May 30), police received a number of calls reporting that the occupants of a white van, believed to be a Transit, had fired shots towards another car in Newstead Road, Athersley North.

The car, a white VW Golf, was then involved in a collision with another van at a roundabout.

Chief Inspector Mark James from Barnsley's Local Policing Unit said: "This was a highly distressing incident for local residents and I am grateful for their co-operation while we carry out our enquiries in the area.

"Incidents like this are rare and we are treating this as an absolute priority - thankfully, nobody was injured but the Golf sustained some damage.

"I want to hear from anyone who may have seen a white van driving through the area at the time of the incident or who may hold any information about those responsible for this act."
