A NEW multiplex cinema will be built on the roof of the Alhambra according to major chain Empire Cinemas.

Plans for the multiplex were first announced back in August 2014 and planning permission was granted in November of the same year.

It had been due to open by now - but the plan never came to fruition.

Barnsley Council has since declared its own plans for a multiplex cinema as part of the town centre redevelopment.

But last week, Empire Cinemas - the largest independently owned cinema operator in the UK - confirmed it would be opening a multiplex cinema in late 2017 developed in partnership with owners of the Alhambra BMO Real Estate Partners.

Empire Cinemas said its Alhambra development will feature ten screens and will be able to seat up to 1,244 cinema-goers.

A spokesman for Empire Cinemas said construction could begin as soon as this year.
