THE MANAGER of a town centre takeaway has been sent to prison for failing to protect employees from unsafe electrics described as a 'death trap'.
Hasan Halicioglu, the manager of Barnsley Kebab and Pizza House on Sheffield Road, was sentenced to four months in jail on April 21.
The takeaway's owner, Barnsley Quality Foods Ltd, was hit with a £40,000 fine for offences under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 relating to electrical safety.
Council officers from regulatory services visited the takeaway in November 2014 and discovered unsafe electrical work, that could have caused serious injury or death by electrocution to anyone on the premises.
Exposed energised wires caused further risk of fire from a spark.
Both defendants pleaded guilty at Barnsley Magistrates Court; however, in view of the seriousness of the health and safety breaches the matter was committed to Sheffield Crown Court for sentencing.
In prosecuting Barnsley Quality Foods Ltd, Judge HHJ Moore said: “It was a death trap for employees. The live wire was permanently current so could only be switched off by officials from Northern Power Grid.”
