SPECIALIST midwives will give practical advice to expecting mums and their families who smoke as part of a new project.
There will be a focus will be on referring people to Stop Smoking Maternity service as part of the project involving the fire service.
As well as greatly increasing the risk of house fires, smoking in pregnancy is known to increase the risk of miscarriage, still and premature birth and other complications.
Mums-to-be will also receive specially designed room thermometers to ensure their babies’ rooms are at the correct temperature.
The thermometers, which have been paid for by the fire service, will also contain important fire safety messages.
The project has been awarded just over £23,500 under South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Authority’s funding scheme, the Stronger Safer Communities Reserve.
