SMOKERS in Barnsley spend more than £1,000 per year funding their habit, according to new figures.
The council says smokers spend an average of £1,323 on cigarettes.
Julie Burrows, director of public health in Barnsley, said the amount smokers spend on their habit could have a significant impact on poverty for families.
She said that 32 per cent of households with a smoker fall below the poverty line, and if they were to quit, over 2,000 households would be out of poverty.
