THE BARNSLEY COMMUNITY are rallying to support a pensioner who's allotment was burned down in an arson attack.
John Holmes, 73, was left in tears after the deliberate blaze killed over 100 of his chickens and pigeons at Hunningley Field allotments in Hunningley Lane, Stairfoot, on Tuesday morning (March 15).
A Go Fund Me page has been set up by Beth Sykes, 22, and Siobhan Senior, 27, to try and raise money to rebuild the allotment and buy new birds, with locals also offering their support in the clean up.
John's granddaughter Sian Holmes said: "My grandad is absolutely devastated. He's been going to the allotment everyday for the past 30 years.
"But the support he's received from the local community has been absolutely brilliant. He's had offers of timber, pigeons and chickens.
"We can't thank everyone enough for their support."
Police are investigating.
