FLY-TIPPING incidents in Barnsley have soared by 41 per cent – with the clean-up costing £250,000 last year.

Incidents in the borough rose from 2,162 in 2013/14 to 3,057 in 2014/15.

The cost of the clean-up didn’t include additional services that area councils have setup to remove litter and waste.

Council bosses discussed the issue last Wednesday, and considered recommendations made in a draft fly-tipping action plan that has been put together to combat the issue.

The plan places a strong emphasis on communication and a ‘behaviour change campaign’, rather than relying on enforcement action.
