EXTRA police patrols have been put in place around an unofficial traveller site that has set up in Royston - as council officers work to move it on.

The traveller site appeared on the outskirts of the park on Monday evening and - although many residents say it is not causing a problem, the site is an unofficial one.

Coun Tim Cheetham said: “Officers from Barnsley Council and South Yorkshire Police have visited the traveller encampment in Royston Park and are gathering the information required to resolve the situation. “The council, working closely with the police, is taking action to remove the travellers from the park as soon as possible. “Police presence in the area has been increased for the time being to allay any public concerns and respond quickly to matters, should they occur." Any residents who have concerns are advised in the first instance to call the police on 101 or 112 or the council’s gypsy and traveller liaison officer on 772573.
