Event planned to commemorate Battle of the Somme

AN EVENT is being planned to commemorate the centenary of the Battle of the Somme.

The event will take place at Barnsley Town Hall on Friday, July 1, and will mark the anniversary of the start of the battle.

Local schools, community groups and members of the public will be invited to attend and take part in the event.

Coun Roy Miller, cabinet spokesperson said: “It is important that we commemorate such a monumental battle. I am sure the residents of the town will want to pay their respects to those who fought and lost their lives fighting for the rights of others.”
