BARNSLEY'S police commissioner has stepped in to halt cuts that would have seen more PCSOs lost to Barnsley.

Dr Alan Billings said they are vital to maintain neighbourhood policing and has halted a plan which would see another 75 go over the next three years.

The last phase of cuts would have seen numbers in Barnsley cut to 34.

He said: “I don’t think we can go much lower without seriously affecting neighbourhood policing.”
