HEAVY rainfall has prompted concerned residents to raise concerns about a footbridge they claim has gone 'spongey' and unsafe.

WABer Jayne Brookes has reported the wooden bridge across the Dearne River near where the old lock gates were.

She said: "It feels very spongey and looks very rotten. I think it's becoming unsafe."

In an email reply, Russ Boland, the countryside and parks officer, said the footbridge is inspected every month.

He added: "Many of the footboards are absorbing water at this time of year and, as you have correctly described, can be adjudged as unsafe."
