PEOPLE who don't pay their council tax could be forced to produce wage slips and bank statements to explain why they haven't paid the debt under tough new steps proposed by the council.
Councillors plan to clamp down on none-payers - especially repeat offenders - and will be persuing prison sentances for the worst cases.
A spokesman said: "This issue has then been compounded by repeat offenders who do not pay year in, year out.”
None-payers will be forced to take part in a hearing if they ignore requests to pay - where wage slips and bank statements would be inspected.
The report states that when an application is made for committal to prison: “The debtor must provide evidence of income and expenditure to decide whether they have wilfully refused or not paid as a result of culpable neglect.”
