A QUARTER of new businesses in Barnsley do not survive to see their second year, according to a debt advice charity.

New figures show 870 new businesses were set up in Barnsley last year but the charity Business Debtline says 26 per cent of them do not survive to see their second birthday, with six per cent winding up in their first year.

Joanna Elson, chief executive of the Money Advice Trust, said: “Not every business can succeed, but some are going under due to missteps that could be avoided with the right support early on.”
