A WARNING has been issued over a council tax scam which promises a cash refund to locals.

The council are investigating after a resident reported getting a text on their mobile which promised a council tax refund for supposed overpayment.

It asked the user to follow a web link and input their bank details so that the refund could be sent.

A spokesman said: "This is a so-called phishing attack and anyone who receives such a message via mobile phone text, or by email, should never comply by inputting their bank details."

Barnsley residents who wish to check their Council Tax account should contact (01226) 787787.
