AMBITIOUS plans for an underground road tunnel that would connect to Manchester have been revealed.

If the plans go ahead it could offer communters forced to use Woodhead Pass an alternative - and experts say it could carry trains too.

The government has carried out initial feasibility work and say the idea of the tunnel system will be further investigated.

It claims a tunnel is the only ‘credible’ solution to cutting journey times.

No potential routes have yet been identified but if it was constructed, it would strip traffic away from the Woodhead route and the A628 through the Penistone area.
