A BARNSLEY woman who has volunteered at the Lamproom Theatre since before it opened has retired from her duties.

Betty Birks has been with the theatre since 1997 and has done everything from cleaning and decorating to coordinating other volunteers and helping with productions.

A spokesman said: "Betty has never been in the spotlight on stage, but anyone who has attended the theatre regularly since it opened will have sat on a seat that has been cleaned by her, eaten an ice cream that she has sold them, bought a raffle ticket to raise funds for a raffle that she has organised, looked through a window that she has painted, been given a programme that she has stapled together ."

Barnsley Theatre Trust presented her with a bouquet of flowers to thank her for her service.
