VAST swathes of land in Brierley, Cudworth, Grimethorpe and Royston have been identified for potential development by Barnsley Council.

The first stages of its Local Plan, which sets out proposals for future housing, employment and infrastructure up to 2033, have been revealed - and more than 35 acres of land could be built on in total.

A six-week public consultation on the plans - which includes the potential for three new primary schools - has begun.

The former Royston High School site, currently owned by Kier Property, and 12 acres off Lee Lane could potentially become primary schools, while the former Willowgarth site in Grimethorpe has also been earmarked for education purposes - despite a housing application for the site being submitted by Saul Homes for 102 dwellings earlier this month.

Vacant land on High Street, Shafton, and Cadwell Close, Cudworth, have been earmarked for housing.
