HIGH winds have made it unsafe to put the stage up for Barnsley's Christmas Light Switch On - leading to the event being cancelled.
The ticketed event - a meet and greet with Queen Elsa and Princess Anna and other children’s characters- is still going ahead as planned in Experience Barnsley at 6.30pm.
A council spokesman said: "Due to high winds the main events planned for this evening’s Christmas lights switch on have been cancelled in the interests of public safety.
"The decision has been made after high winds have made the stage area in front of the town hall unsafe.
"We apologise for any disappointment this may cause but we have to consider people’s safety."
The council announced yesterday that the firework section of the festivities would not go ahead due to the forecast high winds. But now the main stage has been deemed unsafe to go up.
