A PUBLIC meeting has been called by two local groups concerned about the possibility of fracking in Barnsley.

In August new licences were announced for Shale Gas exploration, including land to the east of Barnsley, stretching from Darfield to Mexborough.

Frack Free South Yorkshire and Barnsley Green Party are to co-host the meeting at the YMCA in Barnsley from 7.30pm on Thursday, November 12.

A Barnsley Green Party spokesperson said: "There are numerous concerns over the damage that this industry can cause. Those concerns are multiplied when you consider the history of mining and subsidence around Barnsley.

“We urge anyone who wants to find out more about what fracking in the Barnsley area could mean to attend this meeting and make their own minds up.”
