BARNSLEY'S first electric car charge points have been installed in the town centre.

These charging points are based in two town centre car parks - one in Gateway Plaza and two in the multi-storey.

Drivers can benefit from fully charging their cars within three to four hours for free, although normal parking charges apply.

Coun Roy Miller said: "The council is committed to improving air quality in the borough, including supporting the development of electric vehicles both locally and across South Yorkshire.

"We hope these chargers will make charging more accessible, efficient and practical for residents, visitors, electric taxis and private hire vehicles to recharge during the working day.”

The charging points form part of a wider network over a dozen locations across South Yorkshire thanks to a grant from the Department of Transport.
