A MURDER investigation has been launched after a man's body was found at a home in Wombwell in what police believe to be a 'targeted attack'.

Officers were called to a home on Marsh Street at around 4pm on Friday, July 17, where they discovered the body of John Gogarty, 65.

A post-mortem examination showed that Mr Gogarty died from multiple stab wounds.

A murder investigation is underway but officers want to reassure members of the public that the incident appears to be a targeted attack.

Detective Chief Inspector Phil Etheridge said: “We are in the early stages of the investigation however the indication, at this stage, is that the person who carried out the attack was probably known to the victim as there were no signs of forced entry.

“If anyone has any information they think may assist us, however apparently insignificant, please do get in touch.

“We have a dedicated team of officers working around the clock and are following a number of lines of enquiry.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact 01709 443506 quoting number 792 of July 17 2015.
