A WIND turbine at the former Shafton Two Gates colliery site in Barnsley has been officially opened.
Harworth Estates in partnership with Energy Prospects Co-operative has completed the installation of a 500KW wind turbine.
The turbine was developed on an acre of land and will generate sufficient energy to power around 1,000 local homes by feeding it to the National Grid.
Energy Prospects Co-operative raised money to fund the development through a public share offer - giving priority to those who live locally.
Hannah Moxon, a Harworth spokesperson, said: “We will be bringing forward a number of other low-carbon schemes across our landholdings in 2015 as part of the company’s ongoing commitment to renewable energy.”
