BARNSLEY Council has granted a public open space contribution of £72,138 to Higham Cricket Ground to replace deteriorating facilities.

The existing changing rooms and sporting pavilion are timber framed structures which have been in place for over 80 years.

Deterioration is so bad that it has affected how the grounds can be used.

Coun Roy Miller said: "Improving and enhancing existing sports facilities and open public spaces like this has such a positive impact; it helps people lead healthier, happier, more active and more independent lives.

"Having a suitable community space means the cricket ground can give more to the local area, such as engaging with young people at risk of committing offences by providing an outlet through sport and an area to meet and socialise with peers and support workers.”
