MP Michael Dugher has said improvement to the M1 junction at Barnsley is key to regenerating the area.
The MP has called for the redevelopment of junction 36 on the M1 to the south of Barnsley and the construction of a slip road on the adjacent Birdwell roundabout to boost growth.
Mr Dugher has written to the Chief Executive of Highways England to highlight the benefits of the improvement works.
Redeveloping the site and adding to the capacity will alleviate congestion and allow motorists and freight lorries to exit the motorway reaching their end destination with greater ease.
Mr Dugher said: "It is important that the work is carried out promptly so that these improvements can be realised and people can take advantage of increased access to Barnsley’s surrounding areas."
Plans for redevelopment of the junction were originally tabled by Barnsley Council in January and funding has since been approved.
