AN outline planning application for the town centre redevelopment was approved by Barnsley Council’s planning board this week.

The application sought planning permission for the development of retail, leisure and market space, including areas for food and drink and a cinema, along with an additional shopping area.

There are also proposals for a new library, car parking on the former CEAG site and a pedestrian footbridge across the railway.

The Metropolitan Centre will also be refurbished and extended.

Coun Roy Miller said: “These ambitious plans will boost regeneration and act as a catalyst for further investment in the town."
