AROUND 40 homes have been evacuated in Barnsley and two roads closed while firefighters cool a gas cylinder involved in a fire.

The fire broke out in a domestic garage at around 1.30pm today on Nancy Road in Grimethorpe.

Two fire engines remain on the scene, using hose reels to cool the cylinder and make the area safe.

Nancy Road and Cross Street are temporarily closed as a precaution.

Officers will use thermal imaging cameras to assess the safety of the cylinder, before removing a safety cordon which has been put in place.
