A WOMAN has been fined nearly £700 after her lodger was caught fly tipping.

Joanne Stanger, of Burns Drive, Chapeltown, pleaded guilty to the ‘duty of care’ offence, after her lodger had fly tipped items from her house at land off Rough Lane in Wortley on October, 27 2014.

Ms Stanger said she was "totally ashamed" about what had happened at Barnsley Magistrates' Court on Monday (June 1).

The court took into account the fact that it was her lodger who actually fly tipped.

She was fined £85, £217.50 investigation costs, £311.30 clean-up costs, £60 legal costs and £20 victim surcharge.

Coun Jenny Platts said: "This is a difficult case as it was Ms Stanger’s lodger who committed the offence, but the items came from her house. I hope this case acts as a warning to others who consider blighting our borough."
