A SPECIAL service is being held on Friday (June 5) to celebrate the life of Lord Mason.

The service will take place at the civic church of Barnsley, St Mary's at 2pm and will be led by Rev Canon Stephen Race.

Brian Elliot, the author of Lord Mason’s biography will be talking about his early life. Dan Jarvis MP OBE and Lord Hunt of King’s Heath PC OBE will also be paying tribute.

Lord Mason was a Barnsley man and started his working life at the age of 14 in the coal industry. He went on to serve Barnsley as a Labour MP for 30 years and was appointed Secretary of State for Northern Ireland during the 1970’s.

Over the years, Lord Mason showed a great deal of commitment to making Barnsley a better place and made a real difference during his time as MP and as a member of the House of Lords.
