THE funeral takes place today of well known D-Day veteran Geoff Steer.

Mr Steer, of Cherry Tree Street, Elsecar, died aged 92 on May 14. It is believed that a valve in his heart failed.

People of Elsecar, Hoyland and Barnsley will remember him for his brave war service and the 12 years he spent as a Liberal councillor on Barnsley Council.

Mr Steer was decorated more than nine times for his distinguished military service. Among his military honours were the France and Germany medal, the Normandy medal, the Liberation of Holland medal and the Polar Bear medal.

His sons Martin and Malcolm said their father enjoyed singing and was a keen gardener.
