THE old open market space has been transformed into a garden for a week of events.

Barnsley Council has been planting lawns, hedge rows and trees in preparation, as part of the Love Your Local Market campaign.

Entertainment will take place in the market garden each day, including stilt walking, music and art workshops.

On Saturday (May 23), 20 enterprising young people will run their own market stall. Traders will host a fashion and beauty market on Tuesday (May 26), and from Friday (May 29) to Sunday (May 31), there will be a specialist gardeners’ market.

Coun Roy Miller said: "The garden market is the first of four planned events for the town centre this year that we hope will attract shoppers and families to come and see what all the buzz is about."
