A £5,000 cash boost has been handed over to Barnsley's libraries to allow more community events to take place. Sheffield Mutual Friendly Society will provide the sponsorship funding for a number of community events through to 2013 - and if it is successful, it will be extended for another two years. Tony Burdin, chief executive of Sheffield Mutual, said: "Friendly societies like ourselves were heavily involved in the establishment of municipal library services in the late 19th century and we were keen to reflect our heritage though this sponsorship.

"This is our way of putting something back in to the community at a time when the library service may have struggled to maintain these important initiatives during these more financially austere times." What community events would you like to see in our libraries?
