TEENAGE girls were given a crash course in welding and car maintenance as part of a national project to encourage them to have a go.

The project - funded through a £2,600 grant and offered through Barnsley College - saw secondary school girls learn more on topics that are usually predominantly male dominated in the engineering and science sectors. Event organiser Sharon Hellewell said: “Businesses are looking to recruit the best engineers regardless of gender and more and more girls are being attracted into this exciting field of work. It’s a great opportunity for our local school girls to look at all of their options and try something new.” Pictured (from left to right): Megan Cave, Courtney Allott, Chloe Wilkinson and Rebecca Horbury of Barnsley Academy inspired by Barnsley College Tutor, Craig Lockwood to ’Have a Go’ at a spot of welding.
