A STRUGGLING Athersley school deemed to be failing by Ofsted less than a year ago is making 'reasonable progress' towards being taken out of special measures.

Richard Newman Primary, on Laithes Lane, was put into the education watchdog's lowest category last May.

They said it needed to improve its teaching, pupils' behaviour and rapidly improve the impact of leadership and management.

In last week's report, the second 'monitoring inspection' since it was put into special measures, inspector Helen Lane said the school is making 'reasonable progress' towards the removal of special measures.

"The executive headteacher and the headteacher continue to provide exemplary leadership," Ms Lane added.
