CHANGES to start and finish times at a Barnsley school will lead to extra traffic congestion on a main road, a councillor has warned.

Under the proposals, Horizon Community College's year 11 pupils will start and finish half-an-hour earlier, at 9.30am and 3.30pm, allowing them to get home before dark during winter.

But planners suggest it could lead to an increase in queues on Dodworth Road, an issue which concerns Coun Philip Birkinshaw.

He said: "It's a sensible suggestion as far as parents, pupils and staff are concerned but what effect will it have on Dodworth Road?

"The only problem I have is the traffic on there is horrendous at the moment and one of the reasons the school had staggered start and finish times in the first place was to try and alleviate traffic congestion."

The proposals will go before the planning board on Tuesday.
