OLD speed cameras in Barnsley have been taken out of use - and more face the axe.

Five cameras across the borough were taken out of use last month, which could lead to them being replaced with speed indicator devices or other measures.

It's part of a review looking at the future of fixed speed cameras by the South Yorkshire Safety Camera Partnership, which operates 23 sites across Barnsley.

The five cameras no longer in use are:

Doncaster Road, Ardsley

Wood Walk, Wombwell

Wombwell Lane, Stairfoot

Rotherham Road, Cundy Cross

Manchester Road, Thurlstone

Barry Smith, partnership manager, said: "It's a case of do we really need them or don't we? We will assess this once the data is back from the review and do what's most appropriate.

"If speeds stay within tolerable levels we may consider bagging them for a longer period of time followed by the possibility of decommissioning it.

"However, we never take a camera out unless we are putting something in its place."
