RESIDENTS will determine the future of Brierley Town Council by way of a community vote.

At Barnsley's full council meeting, it was unanimously agreed that the future of the troubled town council should be agreed by local residents, not by councillors.

Coun Sir Steve Houghton CBE, leader of Barnsley Council, said: "This is a big decision to make - a decision which lies with the local residents.

"There are strong views on both sides and we will be spending time before the vote making sure that residents of Brierley understand the implications of either outcome.

"If the town council is wound down then the services which the town council funds such as the welfare hall, the New Options gym at Grimethorpe and the sports pavilion at Brierley will not be funded.

"If the town council continues, it would still need to repay the outstanding debt owed to the borough council."

More information will be given once a date for the vote is set.
