EVER fancied getting back into football but think the pace is too much? Don't worry - the first ever 'walking football' scheme has arrived in Barnsley!

As part of the 'Fit Reds' programme of activities, which targets men aged 35+, the new scheme has now been launched at Oakwell.

Lee Thompson, who works for Barnsley FC’s Community Sports and Education Trust, said: "Walking football is becoming increasingly popular across the nation and becoming increasingly available at a number of clubs and leisure centres.

"This is partly due to the fact that people are living longer and the need for appropriate activities for those aged 65+ is increasing. It seems a logical addition to the current healthy lifestyle programme we deliver."

Men of all abilities are welcome from the age of 35+. There may be some recovering from injuries or have a health condition who may find the sessions preferable to regular five-a–side football.
