SCORES of kindhearted friends, neighbours and strangers shovelled snow to ensure a popular Barnsley man could be taken to his funeral from home.

Steve Mills, who owned Yorkshire Rose Holidays, had been in hospital before Christmas but died during heart surgery.

His funeral took place last Thursday, but his family were devastated when they were told by funeral directors that the cortege would not be able to leave from the 57-year-old's home on Branksome Avenue because of the previous day's heavy snow.

Son David, 33, pulled out a shovel and appealed for helpers on the firm's Facebook page, before around 50 helpers turned up.

He said: "People just kept turning up. I was amazed and very touched. Everyone was brilliant and it was such a nice thing.

"There were people I didn't even know. It just shows how much time and respect people had for him."

David also got in touch with We Are Barnsley to pass on his thanks to those who helped.
