BARNSLEY will be on the route of the Tour de Yorkshire.

A press conference held by Welcome to Yorkshire revealed that cyclists will ride through our town on May 3.

The event, which will include some of the world's best cyclists, will be held on May bank holiday and is expected to become a flagship event in the UK.

It will be broadcast live on national TV and throughout Europe and looks set to attract around one million enthusiasts from around the world.

Riders will travel through South Yorkshire to Barnsley before heading to Holmfirth and Ripponden.

Coun Roy Miller, cabinet spokesperson for place, said: "The race will once again put Barnsley and the wider Yorkshire area under the spotlight, allowing people to see areas of outstanding beauty and showcase the best of what our borough has to offer."
