A BARNSLEY MP has called on bus providers to give greater control to the public.

Michael Dugher, MP for Barnsley East, has launched a new campaign - dubbed Passenger Power - to put communities in control of their own local services.

New figures have revealed that over 1,300 bus routes have been cut since 2010. Those living in rural areas have been hit hard, with some services disappearing completely.

Michael said: "Local buses are the lifelines of our communities, but while the bus companies are coining it in, services are being slashed.

"The bus market is clearly broken and the way local services are provided is not fit for purpose.

"Labour will stand up for passengers by changing the way things work to hand all English regions London-style powers over local bus services.

"This will ensure communities get the local bus services they need."
