A BARNSLEY town centre shop has lost out on valuable Christmas trade after being raided by thieves.

The raiders smashed their way through a set of double doors at the Thornton's shop in May Day Green.

They then ripped out the tills and credit card readers, meaning staff were only able to accept cash until the tills were replaced.

Manageress Claire White learned of the break-in early on Monday morning.

She said: "I think it happened at around 4.20am. I got a call from a friend who arrives early for work at Greggs in May Day Green.

"The tills had gone and we're checking stock to try and establish how much if any of that was taken. It's so inconvenient and couldn't have happened at a worse time of the year."

A police spokesman said: "It's reported that overnight, persons unknown broke into the business premises by damaging the doors.

"A quantity of money and food was taken during the incident."

Anyone with information should call police on 101 quoting incident number 111 of December 15. Alternatively, call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
